COVID Information

As we prepare for a safe school opening, we all realize that our year will look a little different.

We’d like to share some important information with you to help you adjust to the new protocols and procedures that are necessary, based on the advice from Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, Chief Medical Officer and from NLESD guidelines.

Canteen and Breakfast Services - September 14th

Breakfast program (K-12) and recess canteen (4-12) both start up this week. Both will look a little different than previous years.

The breakfast program will have a breakfast basket in the students’ classroom during homeroom with a breakfast food item for each child. Juice or toast will not be served this year.

The recess canteen is pre-order only this year. The canteen will not be open at recess time for students to line up and order. Students will need to bring in their recess order on paper and their money in a baggie. There was a price list sent home last week with the items and prices. The orders will be collected during homeroom. It is important students are in homeroom so they can place their order. The recess orders will be delivered to each class for recess.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Opening Details - September 9th

The first day of school for all students will be Wednesday, September 9th, 2020. (Specific times for each grade/level to follow.)

Unfortunately, our traditional opening day blessing at the Moravian Church will not be possible. We are planning to have students gather outside the school buildings at specific times. Parents and guardians are encouraged to come along but only the students will be able to come into the school buildings. (There is an exception for Kindergarten. Please note the Kindergarten opening plan.)

Similarly, we’ve also had to adjust other practices and programs, keeping in mind that the health and safety of students and staff is our main priority.

Some significant items to note for the first week (and beyond) include :

  • Breakfast and lunch programs will not be running (details to follow)

  • Canteen services will not be available (details to follow)

  • Morning Program will be suspended until further notice

  • Students in Grade 7 - 12 will be required to wear masks in entrances, common areas, hallways and in classrooms where the 1 metre social distancing is not possible. (For the first day, students are asked to bring their own mask.)

  • Any students in K to 6 who wish to wear a mask can do so. (Masks are not mandatory for K to 6. It’s your choice if you want your child to wear one.)

  • Specific entrances will be designated for each grade level (details to follow)

  • Arrival and dismissal times will be staggered to reduce congestion in the hallways and to avoid mixing cohorts (details to follow)

  • Since drinking from the fountains will not be permitted, we are encouraging students to bring a water bottle (which can be refilled at the fountains).

Some general reminders:

  • Hand sanitizer will be provided at all entrances, classrooms and washrooms.

  • Students and staff will be expected to wash their hands and sanitize diligently. ( Proper hygiene procedures will be reinforced.) If students would like to bring their own personal travel sized hand sanitizer, they can.

  • All students and staff will complete a screening questionnaire before coming to school. You could make this a part of your morning routine by posting on your fridge or saving a screenshot on your phone or device . If students or staff have two or more COVID symptoms they have to stay home.

  • Due to the recommendations about limiting the risk of covid infection and spread, and to promote the health and safety of your children, non-essential visitors are not permitted in the buildings (only in exceptional circumstances).

  • Indoor footwear is required for all students and staff.

We can’t “mask” our excitement about welcoming our students back! We appreciate your continued cooperation and support. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.
